I had been eating chicken at my favorite restaurants for a long time.
But in 2016, I stopped it for the first time in nearly a decade.
“I just couldn’t handle the taste,” I told my sister, who lives in the Dominican Republic and is a former cookbook writer.
“So I said, ‘I’m done.'”
I’m not alone in the chicken-eating frenzy.
In March, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially designated chicken a disease, one that can be treated and cured with a vaccine, and it’s now banned from most U.S. supermarkets and restaurants.
And it has the potential to take a toll on American families.
According to the CDC, about 50,000 Americans die each year from chicken-related illnesses, and some experts have speculated that the virus could be wiping out American chicken consumption.
In the Dominican, which was the epicenter of the pandemic in the 1980s, there are only a handful of chicken-loving restaurants and restaurants that remain open, and the only ones that still serve chicken are chain restaurants that have had to move to bigger, better-equipped locations.
“We’re not the biggest chicken-eaters in the world, but we have the best chicken,” said Roberto Garcia, the owner of the popular restaurant, La Gomera in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
“There are many good places to eat in this country.
But the majority of people in this region have to go somewhere that’s better.”
A former chicken cookbook author tells The Verge why she decided to leave chicken out of her family’s favorite restaurants, and why it took so long to quit.
“People eat chicken for the flavor,” she said.
“The flavor is important, but if you just cook it and give it to them and they eat it, it’s a waste.
It’s just not worth it.”
This is the second time I’ve stopped eating my favorite chicken restaurants.
I’ve had chicken on the menu at my sister’s restaurants for about 10 years, and my brother and I had it at my brother’s restaurants before that, too.
“My family has been eating for 20 years,” said the former chicken chef.
“It’s one of my favorite things to eat.”
So, what happened?
Why did I stop eating my beloved chicken?
I was tired of the taste.
I couldn’t get over the taste of the chicken I was used to.
But it was also because of the viruses.
My brother was diagnosed with chicken pox in 2006, and he stopped eating the chicken for a while.
He never went back to eating chicken again.
“He was like, ‘There’s nothing that can kill chicken.’
But he stopped the chicken.
I didn’t want to do it,” said his sister, Lucia.
She stopped eating all the time, too, and only cooked chicken for myself.
“You know, you’ve just got to get used to it.
If you’re just a chicken lover, it doesn’t really matter how you eat it.
But when you’re a chef, it does,” she continued.
“If I’m cooking with meat, I need to eat it in order to prepare it properly.”
But it wasn’t until this year that I started to really enjoy my chicken again, and I finally stopped trying to avoid it entirely.
The last chicken I ate at La Gommera was at the end of April, but Lucia said that after her brother was in the hospital, she didn’t really want to eat at La Tangueta, the restaurant she used to frequent with her family.
She still enjoyed her chicken, but she now feels it’s “too processed” and it needs to be prepared with a different kind of meat.
“Maybe it’s just that I’ve just been spoiled for the past 20 years with chicken,” she told me.
“When you’re eating chicken, you can’t get too attached to it.”
That’s not to say I don’t love my beloved chickens anymore, but I have to say that the taste has changed since I started.
The restaurant, for example, was made with grass-fed beef, but the meat has been supplemented with chicken, and now, there is a “no chicken” sign on the front door.
Lucia also added a little extra to her menu, like a side of roasted chicken and green beans for a nice touch.
And the chicken has gone from being one of the best things I’ve ever eaten to something that’s just too processed.
“What we have to do is create something new and different,” she explained.
“Someplace where it’s not just a good chicken, it has to be special.
It has to taste like it’s made with real chicken.”
I know the chicken is good.
I just need to change the way I eat it to make it better.
I don’s take the word “processed” too literally.
The chicken at La Paz is not a processed chicken.
It is a real chicken, made from grass
