Birmingham, Alabama – Gluten free in Birmingham?
Yes, of course.
Glengarry Glen Echo restaurant owner J.C. Chavarro and his wife have a new restaurant, Glengarry Restaurant and Bar, with a new menu.
The restaurant opened its doors to the public on Sunday and has become the first non-gluten-free restaurant in the Birmingham area.
In addition to a gluten-free menu, the Chavars are serving up burgers, sandwiches and salads as well as the signature chicken and pork tacos, which are made with ground pork and cilantro.
Their menu features a few gluten-containing items including the fried rice and chicken.
“Glengard is one of the few restaurants in the city that’s still fully gluten-friendly,” Chavar said.
He also has a gluten free menu on the menu at his other restaurant, The Biltmore.
Chavarro’s restaurant, which opened in 2014, is located at 3333 W. Wootton St. in Birmingham, and serves sandwiches, burgers, salads and desserts.
He said his goal is to become a full-service restaurant in Birmingham by the end of the year.
“We want to become the number one destination for gluten-Free food in Birmingham,” he said.
The Chavartsons, who are members of the American Society of Gastronomy, are also members of Food Not Bombs, a national non-profit organization that advocates for the rights of all people with food allergies.
Chavar and his family are open to suggestions on menu items, he said, and hope to eventually expand the menu.
“We just want to get the word out that we are open,” he told the Birmingham News.
